Christians take out rally in Mizoram

Aizawl (PTI): Thousands of Christians on Thursday held mass prayer and "solidarity procession" here today for fellow Christians who are being persecuted in Orissa and Karnataka allegedly by majority community.

A two-and-a-half-hour mass prayer was held at a playground in MacDonald Hill here, a place where Christian missionaries began their mission in Mizoram. The congregation then went in a rally towards the centre of Aizawl city upto the Salvation Army Temple.

The mass prayer and procession was organised by "Orissa Ringtute Tuarpuitu" formed by former speaker of the state assembly Rokamlova, who is a Presbyterian church elder.

The provessionists not only prayed for the persecuted Christians but also for the persecutors, Rokamlova said.

Meanwhile, Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), leaders of the conglomerate of 13 major churches in the state is organising a "Peace Rally" on Monday here and in headquarters of seven other districts.

The MKHC, in a statement, said the peace rally was being organised to show solidarity with fellow Christians in Orissa, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.

The state government had announced a public holiday on that day so that the government employees and students could take part in the rally, Rev Lalrinsanga, Secretary of MKHC said.
